If you have been following me this last week on Twitter or Facebook you may have seen that I left my iPhone on AT&T and went to the new Motorola Droid on Verizon Wireless. Here is how my week went with the new phone.
At first glance the phone is nice, very solid and has some weight to it, unlike the iPhone that is very light and doesn’t feel like much. Getting my number ported over from AT&T was relatively simple and painless. Once the number was ported and services were hot, I loved the speed of the data. Very close to the 3G speed of the iPhone. Then I started to get it synced to my Exchange mail server. This is where all the trouble started. First, the email client that comes with the Droid doesn’t sync all of your folders. Like most people I have rules running on my mail server and to have to go in and manually sync them. This was a waste of my time. But there is a fix for that!! There is a 3rd party app called Touchdown for Exchange, a $9.99 one time purchase. Even Touchdown has issues…the main one that I found was that I was unable to accept or decline appointments from the phone.
Secondly, there is an issue with Verizon where you are not being able to be on the internet or send/receive email while talking on the phone. I don’t know about you, but for me, I always need to look something up on the net while on the phone, so I needed that feature.
Third, since the apps are open source, you never know the quality of the development. Apps would freeze and crash the phone. I had to reboot the phone 4 times in 5 days because the apps froze the phone.
After all of this, I actually considered using a Blackberry Storm, but I really love the iPhone. So I have ported my number back to AT&T and my iPhone is back in action. I can now sleep at night because I know that I will be getting my emails, phone calls, text messages and Facebook updates. If you are looking at the Droid, I would consider waiting until they fix it.
Well that was my week of frustration with the Droid. Now I have the frustration of being back on the AT&T network.
All the best in success,
Stu
